A Well-Founded Forecast
In October, members of a Native American community asked their chief whether the coming winter would be cold. Unsure, he said it would and told the village to gather firewood.
Wanting to be a good leader, he then went to a phone booth and called the national weather service. "Will this winter be cold?"
"Yes, it will be very cold," the man replied.
The chief went back and encouraged everyone to gather more firewood. A week later, he called again. "Are you sure it will be very cold?"
"Yes. Extremely cold."
The chief told his people to bring back every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later, he called once more. "Are you absolutely certain this winter will be very cold?"
"Absolutely," came the reply. "The Native Americans are gathering firewood like crazy!"
