Is the Vietnamese Student the Best?
A fasting contest was held between a Chinese monk, an Indian ascetic, and a Vietnamese university student. Each would be locked in a room from the outside, with no food or water. Anyone who could no longer endure it could press a button to be released. Whoever lasted longest would win.
The contest began. The Chinese monk knew Shaolin martial arts and used qigong, but gave up after fifteen days.
The Indian ascetic was accustomed to severe physical austerities and felt sure he would win. After a month, he pressed his button and was astonished to learn that the Vietnamese student still had not emerged.
A month and five days passed without a sign. Then a month and ten days. At a month and fifteen days, the impatient organizers decided to open the door themselves and congratulate the winner.
Inside was a figure reduced to skin and bones, barely whispering, "The... the... button... is... broken!"
