The Fortune-Telling Scale
A nurse was waiting at the airport for a flight to Chicago. In a corner of the lounge, she spotted a scale with a sign: 'Weight and Fortune—25 Cents.' Curious, she put in a quarter and stepped on.
A card immediately appeared: 'You are a nurse, weigh 145 pounds, and are going to Chicago.'
Amazed, she thought, 'It probably tells everyone that. I'll try again.' She paid and stepped back on.
The next card read: 'You are a nurse, weigh 145 pounds, are going to Chicago, and will play the flute.'
She smiled. 'Nonsense! I've never played an instrument.' But as she returned to her seat, she saw a cowboy sitting there with a flute beside him. Somehow, she picked it up and played a beautiful tune.
Astonished, she returned to the scale and put in another coin. 'You are a nurse, weigh 145 pounds, are going to Chicago, have played the flute, and will break some glass.'
She laughed. 'How would I break any glass?' As she turned toward her seat, she slipped, fell, and crashed into a glass panel, shattering it.
Once she had recovered her composure, she paid the remarkable scale again and waited for its card.
'You are a nurse, weigh 145 pounds, intended to go to Chicago, have been doing a lot of silly things, and have missed your flight.'
