The Man He Is Today
His pride was badly wounded. He sprang up and shouted, "I know! I understand! You're ashamed of having a useless son like me, aren't you? Fine! I'll leave and make you happy! I'll go to the city, earn money, and build a career. I'm leaving empty-handed, without a penny, but when I return, I swear I'll make you proud. Just wait and see!"
With that, he turned coldly and ran. His parents chased him but couldn't catch up. They reassured each other that he was probably staying with a friend for a few days and would return once his anger passed.
But he really left. Years went by without a word. His parents waited endlessly, tormenting themselves and each other with regret.
This morning, a gleaming new car turned into their lane and stopped in the courtyard. His parents rushed outside, and the neighbors gathered. The door opened slowly, and he stepped out looking distinguished. Everyone was overcome with emotion. He had come home at last!
His parents threw their arms around him, tears streaming down their faces. He too sobbed, choking with emotion, but managed to whisper:
"Mum, Dad, please pay the taxi fare. I haven't got a penny."
