Too Honest
A husband and wife were driving home when a police car caught up, overtook them, and signaled them to pull over. The husband stopped by the roadside, and an officer approached.
"The speed limit here is sixty kilometers an hour. Do you realize you were doing seventy-five?"
"Not at all! I was doing exactly sixty!" the husband protested.
His wife cut in, "You were clearly doing eighty."
"Eighty? That's a speeding ticket, then!"
The husband flushed with anger but held his tongue. Walking around the car, the officer asked, "That right headlight has been broken for quite a while, hasn't it?"
"No, sir. I just drove over a big stone, and it flew up and broke it."
His wife added, "No! It's been broken since the beginning of the year. I keep telling him to replace it, but he won't."
The officer wrote up another offense. Furious, the husband snapped, "Will you please shut your mouth for a few minutes?"
The officer frowned at her. "Does your husband often shout at you like that?"
Trying to defend him, she said, "Oh, no. Only when he's drunk. Normally he's very gentle and sweet."
