A Special Privilege
The president was visiting a neighborhood, and everyone wore their best clothes. They lined both sides of the road, hoping to receive his attention.
One local man put on his finest Sunday suit, certain that the president would stop to speak to him. Beside him stood a foul-smelling homeless man.
As the president passed, he leaned over and whispered something in the homeless man's ear, then walked on. Unable to believe he had been ignored, the well-dressed man quickly negotiated a swap: his fine clothes, plus all the money in his wallet, for the other man's rags.
Wearing the filthy clothes, he raced down the street and got ahead of the president, hoping for an audience. As the president approached, he noticed him and came over with an extremely pleasant expression. The man was delighted.
Then the president leaned close and whispered, "Didn't I tell you earlier to get out of here with those damned rags?"
