Professors Fight a Fire
A principal summoned three lecturers—a chemistry professor, a physics professor, and a statistics professor—to his office. When they arrived, he had to leave on urgent business, so they sat down to wait.
Before long they were alarmed to see the wastepaper basket on fire. They discussed how to put it out.
The physicist said, "I know what to do. We must cool the materials below their ignition temperature, and they will stop burning."
The chemist interrupted. "No, no. I know the answer. We must isolate the fire from oxygen to stop the combustion reaction."
While they argued about whose method to use, they noticed the statistician running around the room starting more fires. Horrified, they shouted, "What are you doing?"
"Put these fires out using your respective methods," he replied, "and then we can compare, analyze, and determine which method is best!"
