More Chalk, Please
One morning early in the year, a farmer met his parish priest.
"Good morning, Father."
"Good morning, you son of Satan!"
"Father, please bless me, because last night I dreamed..."
The priest interrupted, "I'm not interested in other people's dreams."
"But my dream was about you, Father."
"Was it? Then go on."
"I dreamed I had died and was going up to heaven."
"To heaven?" the priest exclaimed. "You'll never get to heaven. You never even attend church!"
"But I really was going to heaven, Father. There was a very long ladder, and an angel stood at its foot. He gave me a big piece of chalk and said, 'As you climb, mark a cross for each sin you committed on earth. Once you've marked them all, stop making crosses and keep climbing.'"
"After I'd made lots of crosses and climbed quite a way, I saw a man coming down. To my surprise, it was you."
"Me? What was I doing there? Why was I coming down?"
"That's what surprised me, Father. I asked you, and you said, 'I'm going down for more chalk.'"
