Just a Handspan Away
At an end-of-year international summit, representatives from many countries gathered. The American delegate stood up to boast of his country's achievements.
"We've launched a rocket all the way to Mars!"
The Japanese delegate scoffed, "All the way? Aren't you exaggerating?"
The American explained, "Well, not quite there—just a handspan short!"
Next came Japan, famous for its advanced machinery. "We've invented a submarine that can reach the deepest part of the ocean."
The American objected, "Stop boasting! It couldn't possibly get all the way down!"
"Well, only a handspan short," the Japanese delegate admitted.
Then it was Vietnam's turn. "In our country, women can give birth through their navels!"
Astonished, the American and Japanese delegates jumped up together. "You're not trying to fool us, are you?"
The Vietnamese delegate calmly stood and replied, "Also just a handspan away!"
