Bizarre Criminal Cases
1. A man walked into a convenience store in Virginia, handed over a twenty-dollar bill, and asked for change. As the owner opened the cash drawer, he pulled out a gun and demanded everything in it. Having got what he wanted, he fled, leaving his twenty-dollar bill on the counter. His haul: fifteen dollars.
2. A German 'tourist' passed through a checkpoint at a British airport carrying a golf bag. While waiting, he struck up a conversation with a customs officer about the finer points of golf. The officer, who knew the sport well, noticed that the visitor did not know the name of a particular shot and asked him to demonstrate a few swings. The passenger cheerfully obliged—and was hopeless at it. He was arrested, and a substantial quantity of drugs was found in his golf bag.
3. An Arizona company called 'Guns for Hire' supplied prop guns and ammunition for Western films. One day, a forty-seven-year-old woman called to hire someone to kill her husband. The result: four and a half years in prison for the would-be husband killer.
4. A burglar broke into an Arizona bank to steal—believe it or not—a security camera. It was recording remotely at the time. In other words, a tape somewhere else captured everything he did, and taking the camera did nothing to cover his tracks.
5. Also in Arizona, two crooks tried to rob an ATM by fastening a chain to its front and attaching the other end to their car's bumper. They got into the car and hit the gas. The ATM stayed put, but the bumper clattered onto the road. Panicking, they fled, leaving everything behind: the chain, the bumper, and the license plate attached to it.
6. Two daytime burglars 'visited' a newly built apartment complex in Virginia. They smashed through walls and floors, stole a refrigerator, and struggled to haul it out to their vehicle. Just then, the vehicle became stuck in the mud, its wheels spinning uselessly. Thinking the refrigerator was too heavy, they took it back, smashing through more walls and floors along the way. When they returned, they discovered they had locked the keys inside the vehicle. They abandoned it and fled.
7. A burglar entered the basement of a Virginia bank through a street-level window. He then realized three things: first, there was no money in that part of the building; second, he could not get back out the way he had come; and third, his wounds were bleeding heavily. So he found a telephone and called 911 for help.
8. A robber burst into a Michigan bank, drew his gun, and shouted, 'This is a robbery! Nobody move!' Then he pulled a bag over his face as a mask. Only then did he realize that he had forgotten to cut holes for seeing and breathing.
9. An unusual robbery took place at a produce store checkout in Indiana. The robber took all the cash from the till but left his own wallet on the counter—complete with money, identification, and his driver's license.
